Response To Rain

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

Light (and rain) At The End Of The Tunnel.

If this Season has taught us anything, it's that we cannot control the 'weather'.  What we can control is how we respond.  Covid-19 has tested, and at times called our bluff, on what we believe about ourselves and our abilities when faced with unsolicited challenge and change.  Now it appears there's light at the end of the tunnel.  Are you prepared to be greeted with rain?

Rain Does Not Care About Your Plans
My mom would say, 'Sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel greets you with rain.  Keep going'.  As we make preparations to reopen our businesses, parks, homes, and schools, there is a lesson I am sincerely hoping we have learned by now.  You are NOT in control of everything.  If you think back four months ago, you most likely had a plan for how your first and second quarter of the year were going to unfold.  You could not control what happened next.  Similarly, you are no doubt making plans for what your third and fourth quarter should look like.  You will receive very little sympathy from me if you ignored the plethora of lessons this Season has provided.
There is something to be said for people who dance in the rain.  When we were children we couldn't wait to play in the rain.  At some point though we started worrying more about our appearance than the character building that results from embracing inconvenience.  This leads to me to a not so subtle point; it is very clear who among us is more interested in the 'Nouns' than the 'Verbs' of Leadership.  I am learning more from kindergartners than some of you.  Their response to the rain is 'cool', 'so what', and 'why can't we go outside?!'.  Anyone can lead when it is convenient.  There is strength in humility.  Accept the fact that WE WILL get through this and it will be an incredible inconvenience to your ego.  Keep going.
Yes I see you (except when it matters most)!

Smiling On The Inside

I promise I was happy when I took this picture.  I decided to run for 1 hr.  I had no idea how far I would go but welcomed the inconvenience of the wind, rain, and cold.  There is no good or bad except in comparison so I cared less about what others could do and focused me and my goal.  Both Rhinos and Cheetahs are built for speed.  Just sayin'...

Radio Show Topic

This week on Leadership; The Way I See It, I will share thoughts on my experiences leading 'in the rain' and recommendations for how to prepare for reopening our Communities.

Under what conditions have you not performed at your best?  Are you prepared to be greeted under those very conditions you've identified?
